EN 13501-1 Class A1 is a reaction-to-fire classification. For board buyers, its value depends on the exact product, classification document and intended end use. It should not be read as a universal wall fire-resistance rating or approval for every project.
This guide explains how to read an A1 claim when reviewing cement-based boards for overseas construction projects, and which questions to resolve before accepting a substitution or bulk order.
Reaction to Fire and Fire Resistance Address Different Questions
Reaction to fire concerns a construction product’s contribution to fire development. Fire resistance concerns the performance of a building element or assembly under specified test conditions. The BSI overview of EN 13501-1 identifies the reaction-to-fire classification scope. EN 13501-2 addresses classification using fire-resistance and smoke-control test data.
An A1 classification does not supply a duration such as 60 or 120 minutes for an unspecified wall. A required time-based rating needs evidence for the relevant construction, including its components and permitted variations.
Read the Product Identity Before the Class
Check the product name, manufacturing source, thickness, composition, surface treatment and any stated end-use conditions. Connect the classification reference to the grade on the quotation and purchase order. A report for a plain board should not automatically be transferred to a coated board or a composite panel with a different core.
Ask for the classification document and supporting scope rather than relying on a logo, laboratory name or a cropped certificate image. Record the document number, issuing body, standard edition, date and any limitations. The date alone does not establish a document’s expiry or applicability.
Check What the Claim Does Not Establish
- A1 does not, by itself, establish a load-bearing capacity, fixing span or impact rating.
- It does not establish a moisture, weathering, thermal or acoustic property.
- It is not a general proof of chemical emissions, asbestos status or smoke toxicity.
- It does not approve every coating, adhesive, core, fixing or supporting system used with the board.
- It does not automatically satisfy a destination country’s project approval requirements.
Each requirement needs its own relevant evidence. Keep product properties and assembly performance in separate fields so they can be reviewed against the design brief.
Review Complete Walls and Facades
For a partition, compare the proposed board layers, frame, cavity contents, fixings, joints, seals and service penetrations with the accepted construction. For a facade, coordinate the panel with the sub-frame, insulation, membranes, cavity, connections and openings.
Our Interior & Partition Panels provide a product-selection starting point. The interior partition category allows buyers to compare board families. Neither listing substitutes for evidence of the proposed complete assembly.
Keep the Destination Requirement in the Specification
Ask the consultant or responsible reviewer to identify the required standard, classification, assembly performance and submission documents. For projects in England, the Approved Document B FAQs help explain the local framework. That guidance should not be treated as an approval rule for every export market.
When a product is substituted after design approval, review the change before purchase or installation. Record the accepted product and document references with the drawing revision, rather than assuming a common A1 label makes two products interchangeable.
EN 13501-1 Class A1 FAQ
Does an A1 board guarantee a two-hour partition?
No. The required duration must be supported by evidence for the relevant complete wall construction.
Can a plain-board result cover a decorative composite panel?
Only where the applicable evidence covers the actual panel construction and end use. Confirm the facing, core, coatings and any limitations.
Does A1 mean the product is suitable for every exterior application?
No. Exposure, mechanical properties, finish and fixing design require separate review.
Prepare a Product-Specific Document Request
Read the partition system specification guide, then request relevant available documents through Technical Documents. Send your specification to Mainland with the board grade, thickness, finish, application, quantity and destination.
