Use this fiber cement board buyer’s guide to turn an application brief into a comparable product enquiry. Start with where the board will be used, identify the evidence needed for that construction, then agree samples, order criteria and export packing. A material name or nominal thickness alone is not a complete purchasing specification.
Mainland’s manufacturer-direct sourcing information explains the supply discussion. The guide below connects the existing product range with technical reading; it does not replace project design or certify a wall, facade or ceiling.
1. Shortlist Boards by Their Intended Role
Identify whether the proposed sheet is an exterior face panel, an interior lining, a ceiling board or a component of a composite construction. For flooring, distinguish structural decking from a non-structural underlay. Review the available board applications and product families before comparing prices.
| Product route | What to clarify before ordering |
|---|---|
| Standard fiber cement boards | Intended exposure, finish, dimensions and supporting construction. |
| Standard calcium silicate boards | Building-board grade, room use, surface preparation and applicable evidence. |
| Compressed fiber cement boards | Exact grade, proposed loads, handling and approved application. |
| Interior compressed boards | Room conditions, lining or partition role and finish compatibility. |
| Coloured boards | Through-colour or coating method, physical sample and batch allocation. |
| Wood-grain boards | Surface texture, finish, cut-edge treatment and maintenance instructions. |
| Exterior cladding panels | Site exposure, panel layout, subframe, joints, drainage and fixing design. |
| Interior and partition panels | Complete wall build-up, height, board layers and required fire or acoustic evidence. |
| Ceiling lining boards | Panel weight, supports, suspension, fixing and final finish; not a structural floor approval. |
| Composite panels | Facings, core, bonding and complete-panel evidence for the intended use. |
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read the complete selection notes.
2. Compare Materials Against the Same Duty
Use the fiber cement, PVC, MDF and gypsum comparison to organise the shortlist. A decorative lining, a wet-area tile backing and an exposed facade do not have identical requirements. Include the frame, finish, labour and maintenance assumptions when comparing installed costs.
For interior walls, start with when fiber cement boards suit partitions. For a facade exposed to strong sun or unusual heat sources, review heat exposure and durability checks without treating laboratory heating results as a product’s continuous service-temperature rating.
3. Request Documents for the Exact Offered Product
Record the product designation and manufacturing source shown on the quotation, datasheet and supporting documents. Check test scope, specimen thickness, finish, issue details and any limitations. The Technical Documents page explains how to request the relevant information.
A reaction-to-fire classification is not a fire-resistance duration for a complete assembly. Review the A1 board specification checks and identify the applicable local approval route before purchasing. A report from another producer or for a different composite construction is not evidence for the offered board.
4. Link the Sample to the Order
Agree the sample reference, usable dimensions, nominal thickness, tolerances, edge condition, finish and inspection criteria. For visible work, decide how acceptable colour variation, orientation and replacement panels will be handled. Use the facade colour-variation guide to prepare those questions.
Before release, request the supplier’s batch-identification and inspection arrangements. Our batch traceability guide explains the records to connect an approved sample, production lot and dispatch. Confirm what checks are actually offered rather than assuming that a checklist proves inspections have already occurred.
5. Agree Packing, Loading and Site Handover
Provide the destination port, delivery term, sheet mix and unloading arrangements. Confirm pallet support, edge protection, moisture protection and identification for the proposed shipment. Review mixed-container order planning before treating different sheet sizes as one loading quantity.
Plan receiving and installation together. The site-storage and wet-pallet guide covers delivery checks; the cladding cleaning and maintenance guide helps define the handover information for the selected finish.
6. Send a Comparable RFQ
- Project location, intended application and exposure.
- Product designation or proposed material route, dimensions, thickness and finish.
- Estimated quantity, unit of measurement and required delivery sequence.
- Required standards, reports, design references and the reviewing party.
- Sample approval, inspection and packing requirements.
- Destination, delivery term, unloading conditions and desired programme.
Send your board schedule for quotation. Mainland can discuss the proposed supply specification and available supporting information. Confirm price, quantity, production schedule and commercial terms against the actual offer; this guide does not set a fixed MOQ, lead time or warranty.
Download the RFQ Workbook and Weight Estimator
Download the blank Board RFQ Workbook and Weight Estimator (.xlsx, 13 KB). It includes the ten product enquiry routes, an editable schedule, a document/packing checklist and a dimensional sheet-weight estimator using buyer-entered, verified inputs.
No product density, thickness range, MOQ or performance value is prefilled. This workbook is not a technical datasheet, certificate or span table. Calculated mass excludes packing and does not establish container payload, lifting capacity or structural suitability; confirm actual shipment weights separately.
Buyer Questions
Should I choose the board thickness before the system?
No. Start with the intended role and construction. Thickness needs to be considered with supports, loads, fixings, finish and the relevant evidence, not selected as a universal shortcut.
Does a product listing mean that every grade suits every application?
No. The product routes above are enquiry starting points. Confirm the exact grade and intended use, especially when moving from a lining to a structural or fire-resisting role.
Can I use a competitor’s datasheet to approve the offered board?
No. Another producer’s data can illustrate what information to request, but the offered product needs its own applicable documents and the project’s required acceptance.
Which order details most often need clarification?
The board’s role, finish, tolerance criteria, test scope, sheet mix, packing and delivery term should be resolved together. Keep the final agreed schedule with the sample and batch records.
